Over forty years ago, the whole world came to know the music of John, Paul, George and Ringo. Today there is another group on the Beatle tribute trail. Dressed in either their black suits or Sgt. Pepper garb, the YellowSub Marines perform with the passion of the Beatles’ early days.

The band covers many of the hits of both eras. Curtis Remington sings and plays lead and rhythm guitar on his black Rickenbacker. Kevin Coltman, a veteran of the West Coast music scene plays lead guitar on his Gretsch Country Gentleman while singing lead and background vocals. On the violin shaped bass guitar is Russ Kalso. Besides his cheerful on-stage presence, Russ rounds out the familiar Beatle harmonies. Mario Kyriakides plays his Ludwig’s with Beatlesque vitality. He also sings lead on the familiar "Ringo" songs. What brought them together was the music. What keeps them going is the smile on the faces of Beatle fans everywhere. “And with a love like that, you know you should be glad”.

Yellow Submarines... they’re guaranteed to raise a smile.

History

If you really want to talk history of any North American Beatle tribute band, it would start 40 years ago (February 9th, 1964) when the Beatles played on the Ed Sullivan show. I was one of the millions of young boys that went out and purchased a guitar after that. I was sitting in art class way back then, when talk of the Beatles came up. My seat was next to our German exchange student Monica. To her, the Beatles were no big deal. She had seen them in Hamburg.

Later that year, after graduating from high school I forged ahead, always somehow wanting to be like a Beatle. Then in the summer of 2001, I received a phone call from a from a bass player friend. He asked if I would be interested in playing in a Beatle tribute band. It was a curious question that was cause to reflect. And so the long and winding road to reliving the essence of the Beatles began.

Two weeks after September 11th, 2001, we played our first gig. Probably the highlight of our tenure as a band is when we opened up for “Badfinger” in Lapeer, MI.. The following month we headlined the Hastings (MI) Summer Fest. Our last performance that year was on the steps of the Capitol in Lansing, to help raise awareness of the Michigan’s Harvest Gathering food bank drive. The news broadcast video clip resides on this site.

Early November 2003 we parted ways with our lead guitarist and changed our name to the YellowSub Marines.

Folk legend Wally Pleasant filled in as George for three years. (Visit his website @ www.wallypleasant.com)

Lead guitarist Kevin Coltman joined the band in July of 2007. Russ Kalso, plays the violin shaped bass. Mario Kyriakides picked up the sticks to bring forth those familiar Ringo rhythms.

As the graphic art’s guy, I elected to keep the sergeant stripes as part of our new logo because we did “earn” those stripes by playing gigs all over the state. And we are, after all, the YellowSub “Marines”.

Recreating Beatle music is the most enjoyable of my musical career. One doesn’t have to find an audience. I like to say… you know the expression, “if you build it they will come.” With Beatle music, if you build it they are already there.
